It’s a common site throughout Tennessee, a yard ridden with holes. One minute you’re strolling leisurely through your yard, the next your foot is in a hole and you have a twisted ankle. The perpetrator? Moles.

Moles live underground and only come above ground every so often. When they do, your yard may end up looking like the one shown above. Moles dig through the dirt making a series of tunnels, these can both be deep under your yard or close to the surface. The latter creates a yard with what looks like ridges of dirt protruding from the ground, breaking up grass, flowers, maybe a garden. These pests are horrible for your yard, and can leave it both unattractive and in a state of disarray. So if you’re looking to get rid of these underground nuisances in your own yard, try this tried and true technique!

The Soap Method

What You’ll Need: For this natural mole removal method, you only need three simple things. You will need some type of liquid dishwashing soap, the brand doesn’t really matter anything you have on hand is fine. Then you will need castor oil, and finally you will need a bottle-style attachment for your garden hose. If you don’t have this, a normal spray bottle could work but would be a little tedious.

Step One: The first step would be of course to make our mole-repellent mixture. To do this, you’ll need to mix four ounces of castor oil and one tablespoon of the dishwashing soap in the bottle. Then simply fill the rest of the bottle with water and get out to your yard to start step two!

Step Two: Next, you’re going to spray your entire yard with the mixture. This may seem tedious, but it will be worth it once your yard is mole-free! For larger yards, you may need to make a second or third batch of the mixture to finish the yard. You’ll want to make sure to coat the yard completely to be as effective as possible. Additionally, any visible mole hills should be filled with dirt and soaked more so than the rest of the yard.

Step Three: Step three is quite simple, repeat steps one and two! Just wait about a week, after this point most of the moles should be gone but a second round should convince any moles remaining to go somewhere else!

Simple and quick, yet effective! This should ensure your mole problem should go away. The only thing you need to do after this is repeat these steps if any moles return, and it wouldn’t be a bad idea to give your yard a quick coat in the spring to discourage any moles from returning. Like any home remedy, this natural mole removal method may not always work but it’s worth a shot. If you just seem to have a mole problem that won’t go away, call a professional and they will handle it!
