Pantry Pests and Bugs-

What are pantry pests, stored product bugs or pantry bugs?

These are the Pantry Pests or Stored Product Bugs that are most commonly found in or around your pantry or other places you store dry foods. Most common store items are flour, cereal, rice, chocolate, spices, etc. Two of these pantry pests are Indian Meal Moths and Merchant Grain Beetles.

The Indian Meal Moth gets it’s name because it was discovered eating corn meal; sometimes known as Indian Meal. While not even an inch in size, these moths can be a real pest! Their foods of choice are dried fruits, grains, seeds, nuts, candies, nuts, chocolates, dog food and similar items. The Indian Meal Moth is attracted to light, lives all over the world and is often found in grocery stores. The problem with these bugs is that they can contaminate foods. If you see one of these (there are usually more hiding), please put it in a baggy and call us. We can identify the bug and the best treatment plan.

The Merchant Grain Beetle are not often found in grains; despite their name! These bugs are about 1/10 of an inch in size. They are also found in pantries and cupboards. The food stuff they love are cereals, cake mixes, macaroni, pasta, cookies and chocolates. The Merchant Grain Beetle is relatively flat in size to crawl inside boxes, feed and have babies. The most common places for these pantry pests are in warehouses or where dry foods are processed. The problem with these bugs is that they can contaminate food. Because they hid and live in boxes, they might be hard to notice at first. You may even notice them when throwing away your empty box. Don’t despair, we can help. Put the bug in a baggy so we can identify it and provide the best treatment plan.
