Murfreesboro and Middle Tennessee, it’s cold outside and your beautiful blooming flowers of the summer are gone. You do not need to pack away your tools and gloves just because the temperatures dropped. Using the following tips will keep you cheerfully in bloom through Winter.
1. Proper cold weather planters or containers.
Make sure your containers can hold their shape as water freezes. They need to be flexible. Terra cotta pots will easily break as they absorb water. Winter options that will perform better are metal, plastic or fiberglass. Another beautiful option is a wire basket lined with moss.
2. Plan ahead during Fall.
Before the ground freezes, plant your Winter foliage choices. I know it seems funny but people will wait until the last minute. Plan ahead for no loss in your beautiful landscaping.
3. Use an anti desiccant.
Spraying your plants with anti desiccant will keep them looking nice even when cut. This product will keep your Winter plants from wilting. The film will slowly come off with the weather. Usually one application is good for Winter.
4. Don’t water every day.
Once the ground freezes you do not want to water because it just turns to ice. As long as the soil can be poked, it needs watering. But without the heat, the soil won’t dry out as quickly. Monitor your plants and soil for the level of water they need.
5. Find hardy bloomers.
Planting the types of plants that will grow during the cold of Winter will increase the success. Here are a couple of options: conifers, mini conifers, rugged junipers or evergreens.
