Brown Recluse Spiders in Tennessee
Brown recluse spiders are common in Middle Tennessee. They are poisonous and if you believe you have been bitten by a Brown Recluse Spider, seek medical attention quickly. The spiders are known for their violin pattern on their back. Most spiders have eight eyes, but the brown recluse has on six. Spiders with six eyes have a species called Loxosceles. The spiders are tan to brown in color. They seek warm dry places to live. They are commonly found in the corners of attics, closets, under porches, basements, woodpiles, unused rooms, and vacant homes. The small irregular webs are not used to catch prey like other spiders but for protection.
The Weather
The weather here in Tennessee does not bother the brown recluse at all. These spiders can go without food or water for several months at a time. Nighttime is feeding time for the brown recluse. They will dine on prey that is dead or alive.
Identification
Identifying if you have brown recluse in your home can be difficult. There are other spiders that are often confused with the brown recluse. One identifier is a discarded molted skin. The spiders have very small fangs and often cannot bite through clothing. Most bites happen in the night when a sleeping person rolls over onto a brown recluse. Even medical professionals have a difficult time identifying which spider bite a person without seeing it. “The majority of brown recluse spider bites remain localized, healing within 3 weeks without serious complication or medical intervention. In other cases, the victim may develop a necrotic lesion, appearing as a dry, sinking bluish patch with irregular edges, a pale center and peripheral redness. Often there is a central blister. As the venom continues to destroy tissue, the wound may expand up to several inches over a period of days or weeks. The necrotic ulcer can persist for several months, leaving a deep scar. Infrequently, bites in the early stages produce systemic reactions accompanied by fever, chills, dizziness, rash or vomiting. Severe reactions to the venom are more common in children, the elderly, and patients in poor health. Persons bitten by a brown recluse spider should apply ice, elevate the affected area, and seek medical attention immediately.”
