Moths – Preserving Your Clothing & Sanity
As October days slowly slip away into Fall weather you may be looking for warmer clothes. And, into your closet or storage bins you go. When you pull out your favorite sweater or scarf, have you been a victim of moths?
- Moths evolved long before butterflies
- Moths and Butterflies are similar but not from the same Superfamily
- Most adult moths do not eat or have mouth parts
- Moths frequently are attracted to artificial lights
- Several moths in the Tineidae family are the ones that eat fabric
How can you deal with Moths – Preserving your clothing & sanity?
If it’s time to pack up the summer clothes to keep them for next year, there are several ways to help keep them safe. First, have an inspection done to look for these pesky pests. This is an east way to determine if you already have an infestation. Treating the infestation of moths on the front side will reduce problems. Second, when storing your clothing do it with a consistent process. Use plastic bins or cedar trunks. The cedar smell is a natural way to prevent infestations. Other natural ways to help prevent damage to clothing in your storage boxes includes using essential oils (lavender) or juniper wood. Another way to prevent chewed up treasures is to use moth balls. Recent reports are mixed on the overall safety of moth balls. When storing your clothing in an attic space, make sure it is clean of debris. Sweep the floor and walls dirt, spider webs, etc. Label boxes and stack by size. This will make Springtime easier too.
