4 Steps To Prevent Winter Pests In Smyrna, TN

4 Steps To Prevent Winter Pests

Winter has arrived. If you haven’t already, you need to get your home winterized against pests. Knowing exactly what to do can be confusing, so we created 4 Steps To Prevent Winter Pests.

Step 1: Check Your Roof (or hire a professional roofer to help you)

Walk around your house and look for fallen or low hanging branches. Any limbs that come from a tree and touch your home will provide a path inside. The types of animals that can use the branches or tree limbs are: ants, spiders, squirrels, raccoons, and other any other small rodents.

Step 2: Seal Any Cracks and Openings

Many insects, rodents, and other pests need just a small opening to get into your home. Look for cracks in your exterior. Check crawl space entry way and vents to make sure they are intact. Inspect windows for dried out caulking. Then, make necessary repairs. This will block the pests on the outside and possibly keep your electric bill down.

Step 3: Don’t Provide Food

We know it seems obvious… but don’t feed the pests. Clean up spills and crumbs immediately. Inspect your trash can for a tight sealing lid. Tie trash bags tightly and put in a secure refuse bin. Use cedar mulch around your home. Your home is not a restaurant.

Step 4: Get Rid Of Water Sources

A slow dripping faucet or HVAC unit provides life nourishing water to pests. And, termites are drawn to the leaking HVAC tube next to your home. Inspect or call a professional plumber/HVAC company to have any leaks inspected and repaired. Block off the water supply and let the bugs go next door.

Cockroaches are a common pest that have been around since the introduction of our ancestors to planet Earth. It is safe to say that in one point or another whether you like to think it or not your home has been shared with a cockroach or cockroaches and they should be gotten rid of for many reasons. They are carriers of many diseases that are harmful to humans because of where they roam.

Cockroaches Can Survive Nuclear Explosions

With the thought that cockroaches are to be the only creatures who could survive a nuclear explosions it makes you wonder, what could you possibly do that could top a nuclear explosion to get rid of these things? Well the first thing that will benefit you is to understand why they are harmful to you. It will mean you are more vigilant when trying to get rid of them.

The first and most obvious thing to do is..

…Keep it clean and don’t stop cleaning!

The human household is the perfect living and breeding ground for cockroaches. There is food lying about, dead skin cells, nooks and crannies that we forget about. Therefore remain dirty, any food residue like oil or grease. All of this is ideal for a cockroaches survival conditions. This means doing simple things around the house like wiping down all surfaces in the kitchen to get rid of any remnants of food. Also wiping down all surfaces around the house to get rid of dust which contains dead skin cells, sweeping and then mopping all flooring before bed, and making sure that there are no dirty dishes in the sink. The exposed food can attract the cockroaches to it and they will feed off it.

Cleaning the house is something you need to do every day to successfully prevent cockroaches from entering your home just 15 minutes at the end of each day should be more than enough to do this.

Seal up those nooks and crannies

It may be difficult to do as some of the holes in your house may be extremely difficult to get to but to the best of your ability you need to try to seal them up. The best places to look would be behind countertops, the inside of a pantry, the joining of the wall to the skirting board, the joining of the skirting board to the floor, and around your doors and windows. Seal them up with a material that is impenetrable to them, as they are able to get through a lot of soft materials it is best to get a hole filler from the D.I.Y store that is designed specifically for this.

Cockroaches are like rats and other insects whereby they can crawl through and enter your home through the smallest of spaces. So it may be time consuming but definitely worth it in the end to block these entrances.

When pests come from outside to inside it is because something is luring them there. Make sure you have taken the right steps to keep them away.

3 Pest Prevention Tips For Fall

Pest Prevention Tips for Fall

Pest Prevention Tips For FallThere are 3 pest prevention tips for Fall that are very important to keep your home pest free. Because the weather is getting colder, bugs and critters want to avoid the changing weather too. Most of all, to continue blocking unwanted Fall visitors (aka pests), we have come up with 3 simple and easy tips that will help you.

What to Do:

  1. Examine- Take some time to thoroughly examine the outside of your home. This includes all windows, doors, seals, crawl space entries, vents, etc. If there are any broken screens, now is a good time to replace them. Cracks should be sealed with new caulking and door gaps should be closed with quality weather-stripping. It is important to remove old caulking, scraping well to remove any debris while not making any larger spaces. Adding a rubber seal under the garage doors can keep water and pests out.
  2. Seal Openings- Any place that you have an opening for utilities can be a super highway for rodents. Mice can squeeze through an opening as small as 1/4 inch. Spiders can get through openings as small as 1/32 inch. Those are tiny spaces. Take a flashlight (even in daytime) to full a full examination. To block those holes or cracks effectively we recommend using wire mesh, expandable foam or concrete.
  3. Chimney Cap- Do you have a chimney in your home? They are amazing for beautiful fires during cold weather however they can be an open door for unwanted pests. Birds, bats, raccoons, squirrels and other critters can wreck havoc on your home via the chimney. By installing a chimney cap, you will be stopping their point of entry. Don’t forget any attic vents while you are on the roof. Use wire mesh to block rodents from entering your attic through your vents.

Will Snow Keep Pests Out?

snow-winter-christmas-deer-largeDoes Snow Keep Pests Out?

This is a question we get asked about every 2 to 3 years here in Middle Tennessee. This year is the year of snow! Families all over are rejoicing in snow days, sledding and snow ball fights. But what happens to pests during this cold and snow storm? Will they come into your home for warmth and food? Don’t worry too much, bugs are resilient and can survive many seasonal temperature changes. Whether it’s zero degrees Fahrenheit or one 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Snow and Bees-

So will snow keep pests out? No. Snow alone does not keep pests out. But it will make them stick together or burrow in to avoid the extreme temps. Honey bees will stick together in their hive; buzzing to generate more heat. Bumble bees will hibernate in a tree, log or rock. Wasps often burrow in to make an adequate nests. As long as your home is properly sealed, they should not burrow into your walls for a Winter home.

Snow and Ticks-

It may seem unlikely but snow can make ticks more active (as long as their is some humidity). Yes, we said more active. The flip side is that we humans are less active in the Winter. If there are unseasonably long cold Winters with lots of unusually high inches of snow, it may reduce the number of ticks. But, for the most part they are just fine. Vets recommend treating your yard and pets for ticks during this time when their strength and eggs are down.

Plastic Bins - What To Pack Holiday Decorations In!

dog-christmas-xmas-bulldog-large

Plastic Bins!

These color coded, many sizes, clear, sharpie friendly, you name it- Plastic Bins fit the bill. Now, that the holiday’s are over it’s time to pack away all that decor. And, store any of those after Christmas purchases you scored with the sales. But don’t put all those treasures and deals into cardboard boxes. There are several pests that will gladly live and eat away at your stuff. You don’t want any disappointment next year when removing those boxes and finding poop, missing pieces, eaten items and more! Let’s show you how plastic bins can bug-proof your decorations.

Decoration Predators-

Mice– Mice can’t chew through plastic bins and build nests or eat any leftover food that may have been accidentally packed away. Plastic bins will stop them from ruining your decorations with the poop they leave behind as well. They are unsanitary and unwanted!

Spiders- What a better place to live unbothered for 11 months but those hastily closed boxes that house your holiday treasures?? Spiders can get into small spaces. They love dark, unused corners of your attic or basement as it is. Using plastic bins that close tightly will eliminate spiders moving into your mementos.

Other Ideas-

Another option that helps keep your decorations pest-free would plastic wrap. One item people often throw away are the bags that bedding comes in. Those bags are plastic and have zipped sides. Utilizing these bags adds a layer of safety to your treasures.

Do you have an old plastic lid for a bin you can’t find? Those can be doubled to wind lights around. Take the lid, start at the bottom, slowly ind the lights around the lid until they are done. You may even add a small screw to hold the end of the lights.

Label the Plastic Bins! Once you have organized and packed away all those holiday decorations, the last thing to do is to label the box. Two suggestions include clearly writing on the side and top of the plastic bins with a sharpie or use name labels. The name labels are good if you decide to change what is stored in those plastic bins.

Hopefully these tips will allow your late November or early December holiday decoration hunt end well!
